There is a difference between acquiring things and building something.

The first can happen rather quickly. The second usually takes years.

The Lady Elizabeth Kelly Family Office was established with this distinction in mind: to bring the family’s businesses, property, creative work and private interests together, and to give them the structure to develop beyond a single moment or generation.

Its interests are deliberately varied. They include real estate, wine, art, jewellery and design, charitable giving and selected private partnerships, with activities and relationships extending across Europe, the United Arab Emirates, Georgia and India.

There is no particular ambition to make these interests resemble one another. A piece of land requires a different temperament from a painting. Wine follows its own rhythm. A business relationship cannot be approached in quite the same manner as a collection built over many years.

What joins them is not their nature, but the way in which they are approached.

We prefer quality to scale, character to convention and permanence to fashion.

This inevitably means doing fewer things.

The modern temptation is to expand simply because expansion is possible. We take a different view. There is considerable value in knowing what deserves one’s attention — and, equally, what does not.

A property should be acquired because there is a reason to own it. A business should have a purpose beyond occupying space on a portfolio. Art should be worth living with. Wine should be worth opening. And a partnership should be based upon rather more than an attractive proposition on paper.

These are simple standards, but they have proved useful ones.

The Family Office is principally concerned with the private interests of the Kelly family. It is not a conventional investment house, nor does it seek to become one. From time to time, however, we work alongside long-standing friends, families and trusted partners where there is genuine mutual interest.

Some of these relationships have existed for years. Others begin with a simple introduction. We have never thought longevity should make a circle closed; only that trust should be allowed the time required to become trust.

There is also a part of the Family Office that cannot sensibly be described on a balance sheet.

Art, craftsmanship, culture and charitable giving matter here.

Not as decoration around commercial life, but as part of it.

Prosperity is useful for what it permits a family to build, certainly. But it also gives a family the freedom to preserve beautiful things, encourage good work, help where help is genuinely needed and support people whose abilities deserve to be noticed.

That responsibility becomes more important when one begins to think beyond one’s own lifetime.

A family office, after all, is an unusual institution. If properly built, it must eventually belong to people who did not create it.

Land acquired today may become somebody else’s responsibility decades from now. Paintings may pass from one wall to another. Businesses will evolve. Collections will grow. Some ventures will end and others, not yet imagined, will take their place.

Even relationships can pass between generations.

The purpose, therefore, is not to preserve everything exactly as it is.

It is to preserve the judgement with which things are chosen.

Future generations should have the freedom to build their own chapter. What they inherit should give them a foundation, not a set of instructions.

That is perhaps the simplest explanation of the Lady Elizabeth Kelly Family Office.

It exists to look after what has already been built, to create carefully where there is something worth creating, and to leave sufficient room for those who come afterwards to build something of their own.

We have no desire to build everything.

Only things worth keeping.
